Fisheries & Aquaculture

Northwestern Province is richly endowed with vast rivers, wetlands, and floodplains — including the Zambezi, Kabompo, Lunga, and Chavuma rivers — making it one of Zambia’s most promising regions for fisheries and aquaculture development. With clean water sources, suitable temperatures, and strong local demand for fish, the province offers ideal conditions for sustainable fish farming, hatchery establishment, and processing ventures. The Fisheries & Aquaculture program, coordinated by the Northwestern Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NWCCI), works to connect investors with local authorities, cooperatives, and extension services. The Chamber promotes responsible aquaculture development that enhances food security, creates employment, and supports rural livelihoods across the province.
Fish Farming & Hatchery Development

Districts such as Zambezi, Kabompo, Chavuma, and Manyinga provide excellent conditions for aquaculture. Investors can establish large-scale fish farms, hatcheries for fingerling production, and out-grower schemes that involve local farmers in commercial aquaculture.

Processing, Storage & Distribution

Opportunities exist for setting up fish processing plants, cold storage facilities, and packaging centers to serve both local and regional markets. Investments in cold chain logistics and distribution networks will help reduce post-harvest losses and increase market access for fish producers.

Feed Production & Input Supply

Local feed manufacturing using maize, soybeans, and cassava provides an affordable and sustainable input source for fish farmers. Establishing aquafeed plants in the province reduces costs and strengthens the supply chain for emerging aquaculture businesses.

Community-Based Fisheries

Investors can partner with traditional fishing communities and cooperatives to introduce modern technologies, improve fish-handling practices, and promote sustainable fishing. These partnerships foster inclusive growth and ensure local participation in aquaculture ventures.
